Suggested Tips for Writing a Good Letter to the Editor:

Letters to the Editor allow you to voice concern or praise about issues facing your community. They also allow you to voice support or opposition for a political candidate that represents your area. It is very important that letters are concise and the message is clear and easy to understand.

  • Avoid personal attacks. You can voice your opposition to bad policy without a personal attack.
  • Keep it short (200 – 500 words is best) and to the point, otherwise the message will get lost.
  • If possible, reference previous opinion pieces, editorials or articles in the same paper. This is a good way to get your Letter to the Editor accepted and published. Quoting a source is a good way to back up your statement. Always make sure that someone who did not read the previous story you are referring to would understand what you are talking about.
  • Make sure your statements are accurate.
  • Check spelling and grammar.
